In addition to being one of the most common sleeping disorders in the nation, Sleep Apnea is also one of America’s most commonly undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed sleeping disorders. Research suggests that about ninety percent of people suffering from Sleep Apnea are unaware of their ailment.
Recognizing Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea is not the easiest disorder to identify; many of the disorder’s symptoms fit a multitude of other illnesses. While apnea sufferers usually show signs and symptoms of the disorder, the symptoms are not always easy to identify. Many medical professionals attribute apnea symptoms to other common medical issues like depression or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Because the symptoms of this disorder are common in so many other mental and medical disorders, the cause of the problem is often attributed to another source.
Sleep Apnea can be difficult to identify alone. There are many identifiable symptoms of Sleep Apnea, but they are not always obvious to the victim. Many of the disorder’s most helpful symptoms are displayed while the victim is asleep and, for the most part, unaware of the happenings. Snorers don’t hear their obstructive vibrations; they’re asleep. A lot of apnea symptoms are pointed out by people who sleep around you. Bed mates who complain of violent snoring may be the first clue pointing to Sleep Apnea.
Different forms of Sleep Apnea have varying symptoms. There are main categories of Sleep Apnea: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Central Sleep Apnea, and Complex Sleep Apnea. The three categories of apnea share many basic apnea symptoms, but there are some symptoms that can help identify the specific category of apnea you suffer from.
Common Sleep Apnea Symptoms
- Daytime Sleepiness: Feeling drowsy during the day is often a result of Sleep Apnea. Sleeping disorders lead to night after night of poor sleep quality if they go undiagnosed. It’s not normal to feel sleep all the time. If you are getting a healthy night of regenerative sleep, you won’t have trouble getting out of bed in the morning or having sufficient amounts of energy to complete your daily tasks. Patients who suffer from Sleep Apnea often experience extreme desires to nap suddenly throughout the day. In some severe cases of Sleep Apnea, the sleep deprivation is so extreme that the patient will experience micro naps during the day. During a micro nap, the brain of a patient momentarily ceases functioning; micro naps occur after prolonged periods of chronic sleep deprivation.
- Tossing and Turning: If you find yourself, or your bed mate, tossing and turning all night long, it may be caused by Sleep Apnea. When the airway becomes obstructed during sleep, the body’s natural reaction is to open the air passage. Sleep Apnea sufferers often change positions multiple times throughout the night in an effort to support and free the airway. Patients the experience sudden awakenings caused by gasping for air or chocking may also be experiencing Sleep Apnea.
- Lack of Focus: Sleep deprivation has detrimental consequences on the brain. Apnea patients usually have problems focusing during the day. Without the benefits of sufficient sleep, the brain is not able to function at its full capacity. Apnea patients find it difficult to concentrate and focus on simple daytime activities. Because sleep deprivation causes problems in the brain, Sleep Apnea patients are more prone to problems in the workplace and are more prone to accidents. Many atrocities including car accidents and unemployment have been directly related to the strains Sleep Apnea puts on neurological functions. Children with Sleep Apnea are commonly diagnosed with Hyperactivity disorders like ADD and ADHD because of their inability to focus during daytime activities. - Memory Loss: When the body is sleeping the mind is hard at work dissecting and storing all of the information gained throughout the day. The skills that are learned, and the memories that are acquired during the day are studied throughout the night. In addition to organizing and storing all of your daily information, the brain also rearranges the information in order to understand it more completely. People who suffer from sleep deprivation cause by sleeping disorders like Sleep Apnea are not able to store information sufficiently at night. Because of the neurological ineptitude of apnea patients, memory loss is often experienced. The brain has problems storing new information as well retrieving old information.
- Headaches: The body undergoes some pretty severe damage during an apnea episode. Oxygen deprivation affects the brain almost immediately. Because of this, many apnea patients experience headaches in the morning soon after, or directly upon, wakening. Severe or violent snoring can also cause patients to feel pain in the head and neck after a night of restless sleep.
- Moodiness: Day times sleepiness, headaches, and neurological problems associated with Sleep Apnea can cause victims to become extremely moody. Sleep does not only repair damage done to the mind and body; sleep helps repair the soul as well. Many Sleep Apnea sufferers become irritable or depressed. In some cases, patients with severe fatigue and Insomnia experience significant periods of apathy. Maintaining a healthy home life is hard enough without the added pressures of moodiness and emotional instability. Untreated Sleep Apnea can lead to problems communicating with loved ones, and even cause poor performance in the workplace.
- Dry Mouth: Patients who suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea often wake up with dry mouth in the morning. A large portion of OSA patients experience problems in their nasal passages; snoring is often a result of nasal congestion or obstruction. When patients are breathing during sleep, and they experience obstruction in the nasal passages, the body naturally turns to the mouth for breath support. If your mouth is dry when you wake up in the morning, or you experience a sore throat upon wakening, you might have been breathing through your mouth.
